Learn More About These Canadian Dog Breeds

Canadian pups have a rich history and background. Originally, Canadian breeds were housed by indigenous people who bred different dogs for specific work purposes. Although years have passed, some of these breeds are still true to their ancestors’ work functions and have a natural affinity for particular tasks. Here’s a list to explore some of the most notable Canadian dog breeds!

Labrador Retriever

One of America’s most popular dogs actually originated from Canada! In the Newfoundland region, they trained these pooches to retrieve ducks from water for fishermen. From these hunting days to now, Labrador Retrievers’ coats have become water repellant. Plus, their paws are slightly webbed, making them excellent swimmers!

It’s generally known that “Labs” are wonderful family dogs, extremely friendly and affectionate, and have tons of energy for outdoor activities! These canines will keep any dog-lover active with their infection attitudes and desire to explore.

Labrador Husky

This breed is as ancient as they come. The Labrador Husky dates back to 1300 AD by the Thule Inuit tribe, but they are not a hybrid of Labrador and Husky as you may think! Indigenous people worked this breed to pull sleds and hunt. They eventually bred them with wolves to increase strength and endurance.

Today, Labrador Huskies are mostly working in search and rescue or drug searching. These dogs are extremely energetic, strong, and loyal, but crave a pack leader to look up to. These pups are no doubt honorable, serious when on the job, and friendly!

Seppala Siberian Sleddog

The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is breathtakingly beautiful and as ancient as a dog breed can be! With Northeastern Siberian sled dog ancestors, there’s no doubt this breed is born to be leaders and hard workers.

This breed definitely has a pack mentality when it comes to being loyal to their family and other animals around them! The Seppala Siberian is surprisingly calm in nature compared to other similar breeds and makes great household additions. These dogs even serve as protectants of the house when they feel like their pack is in harm’s way, but are never aggressive without being provoked.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

This adorable breed originated in the 19th-century Arcadian community as dogs to retrieve waterfowl by acting as decoys. Just like its name suggests, this pup was generally used in duck retrieving for hunters!

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is still a working dog, but much more versatile than previously. Their high energy and eagerness to please make this dog who they are! These pooches are effortlessly outgoing and adjust to just about any environment you put them in (making them great travel companions).

Canadian Eskimo Dog

The Canadian Eskimo Dog is one of the original indigenous dogs of Canadian people, dating back to around 4,000 years ago! They mainly worked at pulling sleds, hunting, and accompanying explorers (likely for safety). This dog almost became extinct but has made a comeback in the modern-day as different Canadian organizations banded together to preserve the breed.

Canadian Eskimo Dogs are comfortable around people and other animals as they were originally pack-dogs. They create meaningful and affectionate connections with their families and remain loyal. But, they require gentle introductions to other animals outside of their “pack” as they can be extremely protective.

Canadian dogs are unique as breeds have adapted and developed over the years. But, they do share some similarities like pride, loyalty, and dedication, which is really all you can ask for in your furry companion.
